Phlebotomy / Venepuncture Training Thursday 15th April 2021
PHLEBOTOMY / VENEPUNCTURE TRAINING
Candidates: Candidates for this course are expected to be working in a health care setting.

Hand Sanitizer will be readily available. Class sizes have been reduced to encourage social distancing. Each candidate will have their own venepunture arm and equipment to practice on.
Course Aim: By the end of the course, candidates will be able to.
- Demonstrate appropriate infection control principles when performing phlebotomy.
- Use both the butterfly system and the vacutainer system to collect a blood sample.
- List the potential complications during and after taking blood.
- Explain procedure in event of a sharp stick injury
Course Content
The course covers:
- The session will begin with a theoretical component followed by demonstrations and then practise.
- Participants will practise on simulation arms.
- Candidates will have the opportunity to use butterfly needles and vacutainer blood taking systems.

- Take and record temperature, respirations and radial pulse, and oxygen saturations
- Explain how to assess level of consciousness using AcVPU
- Take a blood glucose reading

Basic Life Support (BLS) course covering the up to date skills in CPR (both Adult and Paed), choking, dealing with an unconscious casualty, and practice and use of AEDs.

Injection Administration Technique for Health Care Workers Thursday 22nd April 2021
INJECTION ADMINISTRATION TECHNIQUE
Candidates: Candidates for this course are expected to be working in a health care setting.
Who can attend? - The course is open to anyone who would like to be trained in the injection technique for the administration of vaccinations. At the minute, Registered Nurses can only administer the Covid-19 vaccine, but health care assistants can administer the Flu Vaccine under a Patient Specific Directive (PSD).

- Safely and effectively administer injections (intramuscular and subcutaneous) in adults under Patient Specific Direction.
- Define role and responsibilities of the health care assistant/worker administering vaccinations via injection.
- Describe immunisation procedures for administration of vaccinations.
- Explain storage and cold chain.
- Describe action to take if a patient has an anaphylactic reaction.
