PHLEBOTOMY / VENEPUNCTURE TRAINING

 Candidates:   Candidates for this course are expected to be working in a health care setting.

Course Aim:   By the end of the course, candidates will be able to.

  • Demonstrate appropriate infection control principles when performing phlebotomy.
  • Use both the butterfly system and the vacutainer system to collect a blood sample.
  • List the potential complications during and after taking blood.
  • Explain procedure in event of a sharp stick injury

 

Course Content

The course covers:

  •  The session will begin with a theoretical component followed by demonstrations and then practise.
  •  Participants will practise on simulation arms.
  • Candidates will have the opportunity to use butterfly needles and vacutainer blood taking systems.

  • Define Epilepsy and explain the difference between generalised and focal seizures.
  • Describe signs and symptoms of a seizure.
  • Describe how to deal promptly and effectively with an individual suffering from a seizure, protecting both self and patient.
  • List the circumstances in which an ambulance must be called. 
  • Describe the use basic of rescue medications including buccal midazolam
  • Explain importance of long term management of epilepsy and compliance with same.
  • Demonstrate how to administer Buccal Midazolam

This half-day course builds on the Phlebotomy / Venepuncture course to equip candidates with the knowledge and skills to be succesful at IV cannulation in a clinical setting.

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE COMPLETED THEIR PHLEBOTOMY/VENEPUNCTURE COURSE AND BE CURRENTLY COMPETENT IN TAKING BLOODS

By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • Have a knowledge of Vascular anatomy and physiology
  • Be able to choose the correct veins and select areas to avoid 
  • Know their legal and professional responsibilities
  • Know about sharps disposal and needle stick injuries 
  • Be able to choose the correct cannula size
  • Know how to deal with complications
  • Be able to correctly care for a cannulation site 
  • Practical – manikin cannulation
